Typical Evening --------------- 7.45 Arrive (for 8 o'clock start) 8 Worship 8.20 Main talk, part 1 8.50 (Break) 9.00 Interlude: character study 9.10 Main talk, part 2 9.40 Ministry, etc. 10 end Original Slicing (but see revised version at 01.html#2) ------------------------------------------------------- A proposed way a slicing up Romans into 12-16 sessions Stott's outline: 1:18-3:20 The wrath of God 3:21-8:39 The grace of God 9-11 The plan of God 12:1-15:13 The will of God When I skimmed through Romans, it seemed to me to break down naturally into the following sessions: A. 1:1-17 Introduction B. 1:18-3:20 Humanity's rebellion, God's anger C. 3:21-31 Righteousness given as a gift through faith D. 4 Abraham justified by faith E. 5:1-11 Peace with God F. 5:12-20 Death through Adam, Life through Christ G. 6 Death to sin; living in grace H. 7:1-6 Married to the law; dying to the law I. 7:7-25 Struggling with sin J. 8:1-17 Living in the Spirit K. 8:18-27 The coming kingdom L. 8:28-39 Assurance M. 9 God's sovereign choice in election N. 10-11 Salvation for Israel and the Gentiles O. 12:1-8 The new life (living sacrifices, renewed minds) P. 12:9-13:14 Relationships with other christians, the state, etc. Q. 14:1-15:13 Freedom from regulations; forebearance R. 15:14-16:27 Epilogue That's eighteen: we wanted twelve (i.e. enough that we can cover the whole book in six months' meetings, at two per month) so we need to chunk these together a bit. Some suggested groupings: A+B though it's quite long. C+D (D is sort of explanatory material for C) E+F (Not really related but both quite short) H+I (Not really related but both quite short) (I'd really like to keep J, K and L apart if we can) M+N though three chapters is quite a lot to cover. Q+R since there's not all that much in R. That chunking would get us down to a twelve-session course.
