It is essential that a full, formal and independent enquiry is conducted to cover these serious allegations. It is critical that science not only investigates these issues, but is *seen* to investigate them. If it is not dealt with promptly and in a manner that is exhaustive and fair to all parties concerned, public confidence in scientific research and the ethics of scientific practices will be sorely affected by a high-profile case such as this. A failure to do so constitutes, in my opinion, a genuine problem for scientists who must have the confidence of the general public in their work and their actions. As such, a swift and importantly thorough investigation must be completed to prevent any accusations of malpractice - not just those of the original allegations, but the subsequent investigation *into* those allegations.
